a little bit of canadian winter

There is nothing as quintessentially canadian as skating (hockey) and sledding in the winter. Almost every park sets up a skating rink. Usually there are two: One for hockey and one for families to skate around. Once boards are up, they're pretty much for hockey players though you can catch quiet times and you can skate around without having to deal with a puck or rubber ball smashing into you. We used to live right beside a park at the previous house and I loved hearing the 'thud thud thud' of the puck being pounded into the boards and empty net. It was a sound you could hear all day long during the weekends.

Since there is now a brand spanking new house where the empty lot used to sit in our neighborhood, the neighbors can no longer hose that empty lot down for our own make-shift skating rink. So we've had to go back to the park a few blocks away. It's a great way to spend an afternoon though and even better to come home to warm up and drink some hot chocolate. Ah...
